Freshdesk is Freshworks' help desk for customer support. Freshservice is its IT service management (ITSM) product, built around incidents, service requests, problems, changes and assets. If your IT team runs internal tickets in Freshdesk, the Freshdesk vs Freshservice question usually comes up when you need a service catalog, change control or a CMDB that a customer support tool doesn't have. This guide compares the two on plans, ITIL processes, data model, AI and price, then shows what moves, what gets rebuilt and what is at risk when IT tickets leave Freshdesk for Freshservice.
Key takeaways
- Freshworks positions Freshdesk as ticketing "for customer service" and Freshservice as ITSM and enterprise service management "for employee services" (Freshworks comparison page, as of 6 Oct 2026).
- Freshdesk costs $19, $55 or $89 per agent per month billed annually. Freshservice costs $19, $49 or $99, with Enterprise on quote (Freshworks pricing pages, as of 6 Oct 2026).
- Freshservice problem, change and release management start on the Pro plan; Freshdesk's pricing page lists none of them (Freshworks pricing pages, as of 6 Oct 2026).
- The Freshservice ticket API accepts only the "incident" ticket type, so Freshdesk tickets must be split into incidents and service requests before they move (Freshservice API docs, as of 6 Oct 2026).
- G2 rates Freshservice 4.6/5 from 1,359 reviews and Freshdesk 4.4/5 from 3,777 reviews (G2, as of 6 Oct 2026).
The short answer: Freshdesk vs Freshservice
Choose Freshdesk when the people raising tickets are your customers. Choose Freshservice when they are your employees and IT needs ITIL processes, a service catalog and assets linked to tickets. You can also run both, connected by Freshworks' own integration.
The real difference is the record model. Freshdesk has one ticket object with a Type label. Freshservice keeps incidents, service requests, problems, changes and releases as separate records tied to assets.
| Choose Freshdesk if… | Choose Freshservice if… |
|---|---|
| Requesters are customers outside your company | Requesters are employees |
| Tickets are questions, complaints and how-tos | You need to separate incidents from service requests |
| You need chat, WhatsApp and voice in one inbox (Freshdesk Omni) | You need a service catalog with child requests |
| One ticket type with labels is enough | You run problem, change or release management |
| You don't track hardware or software assets | Tickets must link to assets and CIs in a CMDB |
| Support is your only service team | HR, facilities or finance also need service desks (business workspaces) |
What changed in 2026
The updates that matter to an IT buyer:
- Freddy AI Agent Studio reached Freshservice Growth, Pro and Enterprise customers on 14 May 2026, offered as a promotional free service through 31 Dec 2026 (Freshservice AI Agent Studio FAQ, as of 6 Oct 2026).
- Freshservice ITAM became generally available on 31 Mar 2026 for newly signed-up customers, and change risk assessment arrived on 29 May 2026 (Freshworks May 2026 launch post, as of 6 Oct 2026).
- Freshdesk Email AI Agent became available on the Pro and Enterprise plans on 29 May 2026 (Freshworks May 2026 launch post, as of 6 Oct 2026).
- Freshworks was named a Leader in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for IT Service Management Platforms, per its press release of 29 Jul 2026 (Freshworks newsroom, as of 6 Oct 2026).
- Freshdesk's pricing page now lists three paid plans and a 14-day free trial, with no free plan shown (Freshdesk pricing page, as of 6 Oct 2026). Comparisons quoting a Freshdesk free tier or lower prices are out of date.
Freshservice vs Freshdesk side by side
"Not listed" means the Freshdesk pricing page and help center don't offer it, not that a marketplace app can't add it.
| Capability | Freshdesk | Freshservice |
|---|---|---|
| Record types | One ticket object; Type is an admin-defined label such as Billing or Error (Freshdesk help center) | Incidents and service requests; separate problem, change, release and asset records (Freshservice API docs) |
| Priority | Low, Medium, High, Urgent, set per ticket (Freshdesk help center) | Same four values; incidents can use a priority matrix, Impact x Urgency (Freshservice help center) |
| SLAs | One default policy on all plans; multiple policies on Pro and Enterprise (Freshdesk help center) | SLA management from Growth (Freshservice pricing page) |
| Service catalog | Not listed | From Growth; up to three category levels, child requests per item (Freshservice pricing page and help center) |
| Problem, change, release | Not listed | From Pro (Freshservice pricing page) |
| Related records | Linked tickets and trackers on Pro and Enterprise (Freshdesk help center) | Incidents link to changes and to assets (Freshservice help center) |
| Assets and CMDB | Not listed | ITAM Growth includes asset discovery and a CMDB (Freshservice ITAM pricing page) |
| Workspaces | Enterprise only, Early Access, up to 30 per account (Freshdesk help center) | All plans; IT and business workspaces (Freshservice pricing page) |
| Knowledge base folders | Up to 5 folder levels (Freshdesk help center) | Nested folders up to 10 levels on Pro and Enterprise only (Freshservice help center) |
| Sandbox and audit logs | Enterprise (Freshdesk pricing page) | Enterprise (Freshservice pricing page) |
| API rate limit per minute | Growth 100, Pro 400, Enterprise 700 (Freshdesk API docs) | Starter 100, Growth 200, Pro 400, Enterprise 500 (Freshservice API docs) |
All rows as of 6 Oct 2026.
G2's comparison page puts Freshservice ahead on ease of use (9.2 vs 8.9) and ease of admin (9.0 vs 8.7), but reviewers report a longer time to implement: 2 months from 152 responses, against 1 month from 904 for Freshdesk (G2, as of 6 Oct 2026). An ITSM tool needs more configuration.
Data model: one ticket vs ITIL records
In Freshdesk, every request is a ticket. The Type field is an admin-defined label, so calling a ticket an Incident or a Problem doesn't change how it behaves (Freshdesk help center, as of 6 Oct 2026). Freshservice works differently:
- Incidents and service requests are both tickets, defined in ITIL terms: an incident is an unplanned interruption to an IT service, a service request asks for information, advice, a standard change or access (Freshservice help center, as of 6 Oct 2026).
- Service requests come from the service catalog, where an item can spawn child requests for each bundled item (Freshservice help center, as of 6 Oct 2026).
- The priority matrix, Priority = Impact x Urgency, applies to incidents only (Freshservice help center, as of 6 Oct 2026).
- Problems, changes and releases are separate records with their own API endpoints, not ticket types (Freshservice API docs, as of 6 Oct 2026).
- Links between records are first-class. An incident can be linked to a change it initiated or that caused it, and an asset can be associated with an incident (Freshservice help center, as of 6 Oct 2026).
In Freshservice, only IT workspaces get problem, change, release, alert and on-call management; business workspaces for HR or facilities use cases, queries, issues and requests (Freshservice help center, as of 6 Oct 2026).
Assets are the other gap. ITAM Growth includes asset discovery and a CMDB; ITAM Enterprise adds service discovery and application dependency mapping (Freshservice ITAM pricing page, as of 6 Oct 2026). Freshdesk has no CMDB, so asset data kept beside it lives in a spreadsheet or another tool and needs its own import.
AI compared: Freddy in Freshdesk and Freshservice
Freshdesk includes a Freddy AI Agent with the first 500 sessions on every plan, then charges $49 per 100 extra sessions. Freddy AI Copilot for agents is a $29 per agent per month add-on on Pro and Enterprise. Freddy AI Insights is Enterprise only (Freshdesk pricing page, as of 6 Oct 2026).
Freshservice sells Freddy AI Copilot at the same $29 per agent per month, also on Pro and Enterprise only. Enterprise includes Freddy AI Agent (Classic) with 1,200 sessions per year (Freshservice pricing page, as of 6 Oct 2026). AI Agent Studio, for building employee-facing agents, is free on Growth, Pro and Enterprise through 31 Dec 2026 (Freshservice AI Agent Studio FAQ, as of 6 Oct 2026). Change risk assessment adds AI to change management (Freshworks May 2026 launch post, as of 6 Oct 2026).
The budget point: Freshdesk's AI cost grows with customer session volume, while Freshservice's free AI Agent Studio access is a promotion that ends on 31 Dec 2026. Ask for the post-promotion price before you plan around it.
Pricing and total cost of ownership
List prices per agent per month, billed annually (Freshworks pricing pages, as of 6 Oct 2026):
| Plan tier | Freshdesk | Freshdesk Omni | Freshservice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | Growth $19 | Growth $29 | Starter $19 |
| Mid | Pro $55 | Pro $79 | Growth $49 |
| Upper | Enterprise $89 | Enterprise $119 | Pro $99 |
| Top | n/a | n/a | Enterprise, custom quote |
| Copilot add-on | $29, Pro and Enterprise | $29, Pro and Enterprise | $29, Pro and Enterprise |
IT work rarely fits the entry plan. Freshservice Starter covers incidents, knowledge, tasks and a portal; a service catalog and SLAs need Growth, and problem, change and release need Pro (Freshservice pricing page, as of 6 Oct 2026).
A worked example at list price for 10 agents, before tax or discounts (Freshworks pricing pages, as of 6 Oct 2026):
- Freshdesk Pro: $55 x 10 x 12 = $6,600 a year.
- Freshservice Growth: $49 x 10 x 12 = $5,880 a year.
- Freshservice Pro: $99 x 10 x 12 = $11,880 a year, or $15,360 with Copilot for every agent.
Then add the usage-based items that a per-agent price hides:
- Orchestration transactions: 1,000, 2,000, 5,000 or 20,000 a month by Freshservice plan, then $250 per extra 1,000 (Freshservice pricing page, as of 6 Oct 2026).
- Asset units: from $125 a month per 500 units, where a server counts as 4 units and a desktop as 1 (Freshservice ITAM pricing page, as of 6 Oct 2026). Check how many units your plan includes before you count devices.
- Running both during cutover: expect at least one overlap period where you pay for Freshdesk and Freshservice seats together.
- Rebuild effort: automations, SLA policies and forms are configured again, which costs admin time.
Which should you choose? Five decision questions
Answer these in order. If you answer "yes" to two or more of questions 2 to 4, Freshdesk is likely holding your IT team back.
- Who raises the tickets? Customers point to Freshdesk. Employees point to Freshservice.
- Do you need to tell incidents from service requests? Freshdesk can label them. Freshservice treats them as different records, with a priority matrix for incidents.
- Do you run problem, change or release management, or need to? Formal change records mean Freshservice Pro or above.
- Do tickets need to reference assets? If you want to see which laptop, server or application an incident affects, you need Freshservice's CMDB.
- How much history must come with you? If audit, reporting or AI training depends on past tickets, plan the history move before you sign.
If customer support stays in Freshdesk and only IT moves, you can keep both. Freshworks' integration syncs ticket fields one way or both ways, on all plans, but only for tickets created after setup (Freshdesk help center, as of 6 Oct 2026). It is an escalation link, not a migration tool.
Freshdesk migration to Freshservice: what moves, what's rebuilt, what's at risk
We found no help center article that documents a direct move between the two. On the Freshdesk side, a standard ticket export to CSV or Excel "will NOT give you the entire conversation from the ticket or historical data (archived tickets)". For that, an Account Administrator runs an account export in XML, covering tickets, solutions, forums and customers (Freshdesk help center, as of 6 Oct 2026). The Freshdesk API caps attachments at 20 MB in total per ticket (Freshdesk API docs, as of 6 Oct 2026).
On the Freshservice side, the Bulk API is documented for migration partners only. It takes tickets and notes, 50 per request and 10 requests per minute, with the limits marked "To be confirmed post load testing". It allows 40 MB of attachments per entity, and the guide doesn't say whether original created dates are kept (Freshservice help center, as of 6 Oct 2026). A Freshservice Community Manager wrote in Nov 2021 that there was no direct ticket import, only a support-run CSV migration or the API (Freshworks Community, as of 6 Oct 2026).
Workflows, automations, business rules, SLA definitions, canned responses and running SLA timers don't migrate. They are rebuilt on Freshservice.
| Moves (with mapping) | Rebuilt on Freshservice | At risk |
|---|---|---|
| Tickets, as incidents or service requests after a Type-based split | Automation rules and business rules | Tickets that need to become problems or changes, which are separate records |
| Public replies and private notes, kept apart | SLA policies, business hours and escalations | Original created and resolved dates (not addressed in the Bulk API guide) |
| Requesters, agents and groups | Ticket forms, custom fields and dropdown values | SLA history and running timers, which restart |
| Companies, mapped to departments | Service catalog items, which have no Freshdesk equivalent | Linked and tracker ticket relationships |
| Status (Open, Pending, Resolved, Closed) and priority (Low to Urgent), same values on both APIs | Priority matrix for incidents | Archived tickets missed by a standard export |
| Knowledge base categories, folders and articles | Canned responses and portal branding | KB folders nested deeper than your Freshservice plan allows |
| Attachments within size limits | Roles, permissions and workspaces | Attachments over the 40 MB per-entity limit |
Two mapping details catch teams out. Status and priority values match on both APIs, but types don't: the Freshservice ticket API supports only the "incident" type, and service requests are created through a separate call (Freshdesk and Freshservice API docs, as of 6 Oct 2026). And Freshdesk allows knowledge base folders 5 levels deep, while Freshservice nests folders up to 10 levels only on Pro and Enterprise (Freshdesk and Freshservice help centers, as of 6 Oct 2026). On Starter or Growth, plan to flatten.
MigrateX runs moves like this as a controlled change: mapped, test-migrated, cut over with delta sync, then reconciled and signed off.
Freshdesk to Freshservice checklist
- Confirm which teams stay on Freshdesk.
- Pick the Freshservice plan by process: Growth for catalog and SLAs, Pro for problem, change and release.
- Count assets and convert them to asset units before you budget.
- Run a Freshdesk account export and keep it as your archive copy.
- Audit Freshdesk Type values and decide which become incidents and which become service requests.
- List every automation, SLA policy, form and canned response that must be rebuilt.
- Map companies to departments and check that every requester has an email.
- Measure attachments against the Freshservice Bulk API limit of 40 MB per entity (Freshservice help center, as of 6 Oct 2026).
- Check knowledge base folder depth against your Freshservice plan.
- Decide how closed tickets will be flagged so they don't distort new SLA reports.
- Run a test migration on a sample and reconcile counts by status, priority and type.
- Set a freeze window, cut over with a delta sync, and plan hypercare for the first weeks.
