Methodology: We compared ServiceNow and Salesforce pricing pages, product and developer documentation and newsroom posts, G2 review data, Gartner placements as announced by each vendor, and one Vendr benchmark, all checked on 5 Oct 2026. No vendor reviewed or paid for this article. We did not run hands-on tests.

In the ServiceNow vs Salesforce Service Cloud decision, ServiceNow is the stronger fit when IT service management is the main job, and Salesforce Service Cloud is the stronger fit when customer service runs on Salesforce CRM data. ServiceNow is built around ITIL processes and a CMDB. Service Cloud, which Salesforce now calls Agentforce Service, is built around cases, accounts and contacts. In 2026 the line blurred: Salesforce now sells a separate ITSM product and repriced its service editions. If you run IT and customer service on different platforms and are weighing consolidation, this guide compares capabilities, record models, AI, prices and what moves when you switch.

Key takeaways

  • Salesforce lists Service Cloud at $195 (Core), $395 (Advanced) and $550 (Max) per user per month, billed annually (Salesforce pricing page, as of 5 Oct 2026).
  • ServiceNow publishes no list prices for ITSM or Customer Service Management (CSM). Both pricing pages offer only a "Get Custom Quote" option (ServiceNow pricing pages, as of 5 Oct 2026).
  • Salesforce's ITSM product, Agentforce IT Service, lists IT Service Desk at $75 (Enterprise) and $150 (Unlimited) per user per month, with incident, problem and change management (Salesforce IT Service page, as of 5 Oct 2026).
  • ServiceNow says it is a Leader in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for IT Service Management Platforms, dated 27 Jul 2026 (ServiceNow, as of 5 Oct 2026).
  • On G2, Agentforce Service (formerly Salesforce Service Cloud) rates 4.4/5 from 8,433 reviews, ServiceNow ITSM 4.5/5 from 1,988 and ServiceNow CSM 4.4/5 from 506 (G2, as of 5 Oct 2026).

ServiceNow vs Salesforce Service Cloud: the short answer

The two platforms started from opposite ends. ServiceNow began in IT and added customer service through CSM. Salesforce began with CRM and customer service, and added Agentforce IT Service, generally available since October 2025 (Salesforce news, as of 5 Oct 2026). So the real match-ups are ServiceNow CSM against Service Cloud, and ServiceNow ITSM against Agentforce IT Service.

Choose ServiceNow if…Choose Salesforce Service Cloud if…
IT owns the platform and needs incident, problem, change and a CMDB togetherCustomer service owns the platform and agents need account and contact history beside every case
Your CMDB models servers, applications and service dependencies, not only end-user devicesYour sales, marketing and customer data already live in Salesforce
You expect to negotiate an enterprise agreement and accept quote-only pricingYou want published per-user list prices to build a budget from
You want customer cases and IT incidents on one platformYou want an employee AI agent next to your current ITSM, at $15 per user per month (Salesforce IT Service page, as of 5 Oct 2026)

Verdict: for ITSM depth, ServiceNow is the established choice; for CRM-led customer service, Service Cloud is.

What changed in 2026 for ServiceNow and Salesforce

Service Cloud got a new name. Salesforce's help documentation now says "Service Cloud is now Agentforce Service" (Salesforce Help, as of 5 Oct 2026). This guide uses both names.

Salesforce replaced its editions. On 6 Sep 2026, Salesforce introduced Core, Advanced and Max editions at $195, $395 and $550 per user per month, with 500,000, 1 million and 2.75 million Flex Credits included. It says "Existing customer pricing on legacy editions remains unchanged" (Salesforce newsroom, as of 5 Oct 2026), so a legacy renewal is a different negotiation from a new purchase.

Salesforce moved into ITSM directly. Agentforce IT Service automates "end-to-end ITIL processes for Incident, Problem, and Change Management" with an embedded CMDB (Salesforce news, 9 Oct 2025, as of 5 Oct 2026). On 26 Feb 2026, Salesforce said more than 180 organizations had selected it, a vendor figure (Salesforce press release, as of 5 Oct 2026).

ServiceNow folded AI into every package. On 9 Apr 2026, ServiceNow said AI, data, security and governance are now in every offering rather than a separate purchase. On 5 May 2026 it announced ServiceNow Otto, which combines Now Assist, Moveworks and AI Experience (ServiceNow newsroom, as of 5 Oct 2026).

Analyst placements moved. ServiceNow announced it is a Leader in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for IT Service Management Platforms (ServiceNow, as of 5 Oct 2026). Salesforce announced it is a Leader in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for AI Applications in IT Service Management, dated 17 Aug 2026 (Salesforce, as of 5 Oct 2026), while itsm.tools reports it as a Niche Player in the ITSM platforms report (itsm.tools, 3 Sep 2026, as of 5 Oct 2026). Both vendors announced Leader placements in the 2025 Gartner Magic Quadrant for the CRM Customer Engagement Center.

Side-by-side capabilities: ServiceNow vs Salesforce Service Cloud

The table compares what each vendor lists by package across its four products.

The practical gap is CMDB scope. Salesforce describes the IT Service Desk Enterprise CMDB as covering "end-user devices" (Salesforce IT Service page, as of 5 Oct 2026). Teams that model servers, applications and service dependencies should check how far that reaches before planning a switch. Users of both raise complexity: G2 reviewers of Agentforce Service most often cite complexity (697 mentions), and ServiceNow CSM reviewers a complicated learning curve (18) (G2, as of 5 Oct 2026).

Data model differences: cases and accounts vs incidents and CIs

The core difference is the anchor record. Salesforce hangs service work on the customer; ServiceNow hangs it on the task and the configuration item.

Salesforce starts from the customer. Its Case object "represents a case, which is a customer issue or problem," and cases sit under accounts and contacts. IT records are separate objects: Incident, Problem and, for Agentforce IT Service, an extended ChangeRequest from API version 65.0. A junction object, CaseRelatedIssue, links a customer Case to the Incident or Problem behind it. The IT Service Incident references entitlements and business hours for SLAs (Salesforce developer documentation, as of 5 Oct 2026).

ServiceNow starts from the task and the CI. Incidents, problems, changes and CSM cases are records on one platform. In the CMDB, a relationship consists of a parent CI, a child CI and a relationship type, such as "Managed by," and SLA repair "uses the history from the Task" (ServiceNow documentation, as of 5 Oct 2026). CSM tracks relationships such as account and consumer, or partner and company (ServiceNow CSM data sheet, Feb 2024, as of 5 Oct 2026).

AI compared: Now Assist and Otto vs Agentforce

ServiceNow bundles AI into its packages, while Salesforce bundles a credit allowance and meters usage above it.

ServiceNow lists Now Assist in every ITSM package (ServiceNow ITSM pricing page, as of 5 Oct 2026), and Otto is rolling out "across all products in the year ahead" (ServiceNow newsroom, as of 5 Oct 2026).

Salesforce includes Casey, the Help Agent, from Advanced, and the full Agentforce for Service suite in Max (Salesforce pricing page, as of 5 Oct 2026). For IT, Flex Credits are included and unmetered in IT and HR Service products, and IT Service Desk Unlimited adds SLA breach, major incident and change risk predictions (Salesforce IT Service page, as of 5 Oct 2026).

Salesforce's worked pricing examples come to $0.10 per action (Salesforce Agentforce pricing page, as of 5 Oct 2026). Neither vendor's AI can use history left in the old platform, so migration scope shapes what AI can do on day one.

ServiceNow vs Salesforce Service Cloud pricing and TCO

Salesforce publishes per-user list prices. ServiceNow does not, so a like-for-like comparison needs a ServiceNow quote.

As a rough benchmark, Vendr reports a median ServiceNow contract of $129,871 per year across 109 purchases of all ServiceNow products (Vendr, updated Feb 2026, as of 5 Oct 2026). That is one third-party data set, not a list price. At list price, 100 Service Cloud Core seats come to $234,000 a year before discounts and add-ons (our arithmetic from the Salesforce pricing page, as of 5 Oct 2026). Four factors move total cost more than the seat price:

  1. Storage. Salesforce documents 10 GB of data storage plus 20 MB per user license on Enterprise and Unlimited editions, and 10 GB of file storage per org (Salesforce Help, as of 5 Oct 2026). Years of migrated cases, emails and attachments count against it.
  2. Legacy editions. Existing Salesforce customers keep legacy pricing (Salesforce newsroom, as of 5 Oct 2026), so model renewal and upgrade paths separately.
  3. Running two platforms. ServiceNow's Salesforce spoke requires an Integration Hub subscription (ServiceNow support article, as of 5 Oct 2026).
  4. Implementation and admin skills. Both platforms need specialist administrators.

Which should you choose? Five decision questions

  1. Who owns the platform, IT or customer service? Let the owner's core process decide. Adding the other function later is easier than rebuilding the core.
  2. How deep is your CMDB? If change risk depends on server, application and service relationships, check Salesforce's IT Service CMDB scope against your CI classes first.
  3. Where does your customer data live? If account and order data already sit in Salesforce, Service Cloud avoids a sync.
  4. How do you want to buy? Salesforce gives list prices and a credit model. ServiceNow gives a negotiated quote with AI bundled into packages.
  5. What happens to your history? Decide whether years of cases, incidents, changes and SLA records come with you, go to an archive, or stay behind. That drives migration cost more than the platform choice.

Migrating between ServiceNow and Salesforce Service Cloud

Switching between them is a data migration with a model change, not an export and import. A ServiceNow incident with linked problems, changes and CIs has no single Salesforce equivalent, and the reverse is also true. Workflows, automations, business rules, SLA definitions, macros and running SLA timers are rebuilt on the target, not migrated.

ServiceNow to Salesforce. The ServiceNow Table API returns up to 10,000 records per request by default, with sysparm_offset for paging (ServiceNow documentation, as of 5 Oct 2026). On the Salesforce side, the Data Import Wizard is meant for loads under 50,000 records, Data Loader handles CSV files of up to 150 million records, and Salesforce suggests a partner above that (Salesforce developer documentation, as of 5 Oct 2026). Plan storage before the first test load.

Salesforce to ServiceNow. Cases need a decision: CSM cases for external customers, or incidents and requests for internal users. Because SLA repair works from task history, carry past SLA outcomes across as fields.

Coexistence is an option. Salesforce says IT Service "can be deployed alongside your existing ITSM" (Salesforce IT Service page, as of 5 Oct 2026). That avoids a cutover, but history stays in the old platform until it is moved or archived. MigrateX runs this kind of move as a controlled change: mapped, test-migrated, cut over with delta sync, reconciled and signed off.

ServiceNow vs Salesforce switching checklist

  1. Decide which function owns the target platform: IT, customer service or both.
  2. Compare your CMDB classes and relationships with the target's CMDB scope.
  3. Count records per type: cases, incidents, problems, changes, knowledge, CIs and attachments.
  4. Decide history scope: everything, a date cutoff, or archive plus open records.
  5. Map states, priorities and the priority matrix before any test load.
  6. Load accounts, contacts, users and assignment groups first.
  7. Check Salesforce data and file storage against migrated volume.
  8. Rebuild and test workflows, SLA policies, routing and catalog items.
  9. Run a test migration and reconcile counts, links, note visibility and SLA fields.
  10. Agree a freeze window, cutover with delta sync, go/no-go criteria and hypercare.

Methodology

We read ServiceNow and Salesforce pricing pages, product pages, developer and product documentation, support articles and newsroom posts, plus G2 product pages, on 5 Oct 2026. Gartner placements are cited to each vendor's own announcement, and one placement to itsm.tools. ServiceNow price context comes from Vendr and is attributed. We did not run hands-on tests or use vendor AI performance claims. Prices are USD list prices before discounts and taxes.

About MigrateX

With 20 years in enterprise ITSM, we've seen what breaks when a service desk changes platforms: SLA clocks reset, CI relationships disappear, and years of ticket history get scoped out to protect a go-live date. MigrateX moves that history intact, with tickets, attachments, relationships and audit trails, so your new platform starts with the record your team already trusts.
